TFTP not working anymore with Windows Deployment Services

Recently I rebuilded my VMWare ESXi server due to some disk problems. So I also needed to reinstall my virtual servers. For that I wanted to use the Windows Deployment Services (WDS) again. I configured it excatly the same as I have done before. But this time it would not work.

The virtual server received an ip address from the DHCP server and started the PXE boot, found the WDS server. And there it stopped, ending with the message PXE-E32: TFTP open timeout.

It seems that the security patch for DNS (MS08-037) is the reason why it stopped working. That explains it was working before. I guess the old setup did not have this patch.

Microsoft released a KB article that explains how to solve the problems. You can find it at here.

Ofcourse you will only have this problem if DNS and WDS are on the same server. If WDS is on a seperate server then you won’t have this problem.

How to fold an reflector or an collapsible background?

Today I received some goodies that I ordered last week. A black and white collapsible background and a reflector. Unfolding them is very easy. But folding them back so you can store them is a different story. There is no manual included on how to fold them. And after a lot of trying I still was not succesful.

But luckily we always have Internet and there I found this video. Which explains how to fold the background and a reflector.

Tulip with reflection

Earlier this month I bought some tulips and thought it was nice to use one as a subject for a photograph. So on a rainy sunday morning I collected all the things I needed. The camera, lights, background paper, sheet of glas and other accesories. After a while my dining room was transformed in a small studio.

First thing I did was to make some test shot to get the white balance right. For this I took a photo of a white piece of paper. And told the camera to use it for the custom white balance setting. Then it was time to get the exposure right. This was mostly a matter of trial and error as I don’t own a light meter. I took a shot, looked at the picture and the histogram. Then made the necesary exposure setting changes. And repeated the whole procedure again until I was happy with the exposure.

After a few test shots I found the right exposure I wanted and started to photographing the tulip. Most of photo’s worked out nicely. I am happy with the results although there is room for improvement.

Holiday in Brazil

Last month I was in Brazil to visit my girlfriend, have a short holiday and escape from the cold weather in Holland.

My flight to São Paulo would leave at friday 5 februari at 10 am in the morning from Schiphol airport. Because I did not want to travel in the middle of the night to the airport I decided to take a hotel room near the airport. The cheapest room I could fine was at the CitizenM hotel and it was the closest to the airport. It was 99 euro for one night, no breakfast included. The room was very nice. With lot of design futures. But I don’t think I will stay there again. When you arrive at the hotel there is no real check-in desk. In the hall you will find computers which you can use to check in. For me that is no big problem, I am used to using computers. The whole process is very simple. While I was busy checking in some employee of the hotel walk to my computer and without saying anything he took over the computer and finished the check in process for me. He gave me the key and left again without saying anythings. I thought that was not very friendly. The same happened when I was checking out the next morning. And the employees also only speak english.

After a good sleep I walked to the airport, dropped of my luggage and passed the customs. Then the long wait started. To kill time I walked around the airport. Look at the duty free shops and bought a present. After that I sat down to have a cup of coffee and something to eat. When it was almost time to board the plane I walked to the gate. There was already a long waiting line in front of the security check. When it was my turn the detector kept going off when I passed it. So the customs officer want to search me by hand. After some time he was confinced that I did not have any metal object on me. Which I knew ofcourse.

The take off of the plane was delayed for about 30 minutes. This because of an argument between 2 passengers. It was a couple who’s relationship was not so good I think. The man was threatening a few times to leave the plane. But apparently she did not care. The problem is that when you have boarded the plane it is not easy to get off the plane. With some help of the stewards the situation was resolved and finally the plane would leave.

The flight it self was relaxed. Read my book, watched some movies and talked to my neighbours. Only before the coast of Brazil we had some heavy turbulence. Actually it was not so bad, but we had to stay in our seat and the safety belt. It was more like driving on a bad road. But at one point the airplane flew in a airpocket. Because of that the airplane dropped a few meters. At that point my stomach did not like it so much anymore. Ziek Luckily after that it was a smooth flight again.

After a 12 hour flight I finally set foot on Brazilian soil. When I left the plan I could feel the hot air already. It felt very nice, considering that it was freezing when I left Holland. Getting through the Brazilian Customs can take some time. So while I was waiting I tried to call my parents. My mother is always nervous when I go flying. So she likes it when I call to tell that I arrived safely. But to my horror my phone would not want to work. It kept saying that the sim card could not be registered. I tried different settings on my phone. And finaly when I restarted my phone it worked again. I was very relieved. So I called my parents, sent a text message to my sister and to Eliana.

Eliana was delayed so I was waiting there for her to arrive. It was nice to see her again after 6 months. Now we only needed to go her appartment. For this we took the bus to Congonhas Airport in São Paulo and from there we took a taxi to her appartment. Everything together it was a long trip, but I was happy to be there and enjoy my holiday.

Soon I will write more.

Ferrari's new F1 car for 2010

This morning Ferrari presented its new Formula 1 car to the world. The new car is called F10 and hopefully Massa and Alonse will be able to fight for the championship this season. Last seasons car, the F60, was not good enough.

The new car features a double deck diffuser, which Brawn GP and a few other teams had last year. The front of the new car looks like the RB5 that Red Bull used last year. Also new on the car is the sponsor Santander. More information, photo’s and video’s can be found at Ferrari’s website.

Today’s shakedown at Ferrari’s circuit Fiorano was cancelled today because of bad weather.

Let’s hope that the new car will bring more success for the Italian team. In Bahrain we will see.

Return of the King

Yesterday Mercedes GP announced that Michael Schumacher will return to Formula 1 and will drive one of their cars.

If it is smart of him to come back I don’t know. But it will be interesting to see how he will do in these types of Formula 1 cars and to see him battle with his much younger colleagues. For them it will be wonderfull to race againts the big champion.

I have always found it very sad that we did not see battles on the track between Senna and Schumacher. And I found it equally sad we did not get so see battles between Hamilton and Schumacher, Raikonnen and Schumacher or the German battle between Vettel and Schumacher. 2010 Will be very interesting to watch.

For sure Schumacher will be fast. But wille he be faster then the young boys? Next year we will find out.

Winter Wonderland

Last Thursday winter arrived in Holland. It started to snow heavily and most of the country was covered in snow. Last sunday I was able to make some photo’s. For this I went to the park close to my appartment. In the park it was busy. Lots of parents with their children playing in the park. After a while it started to snow more heavily so I decided to return home. Below you can see some of the photo’s I took.

Ayrton Senna best F1 driver ever

Last week Brazilian F1 driver Ayrton Senna was choosen as best Formula 1 driver ever. This was the result of a poll by Autosport Magazine among 217 current and former F1 drivers. Number two is Micheal Schumacher and number 3 is Juan Manuel Fangio.

Ayrton Senna's Grave

Ayrton Senna's Grave

This summer when I was in Brazil I was able to visit the grave of Ayrton Senna. Senna is burried at the Murumbi Cemetery in São Paulo. His grave is very simple, not what you expect for a man who was such a hero in his country and for others. Including me.

Being at Ayrton Senna’s grave was a very special moment for me. I cannot find words to describe the feelings I felt at that moment,  I will not even try to describe them. And just leave it with this. I am very happy that I have been able to go there and pay my respect to one of the greatest champions who drove in Formula 1. And sadly died too young.
